Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed back Angie McClellan, homeless liaison with the Nassau County School District. McClellan administers the FIT program -- Families in Transition, which provides assistance to more than 500 students whose families have no home and are, instead, living in a shelter, vehicle, substandard housing or other precarious situation. McClellan said the FIT program strives to help students overcome educational barriers such as inability to meet school enrollment requirements, high mobility caused by the loss of a home base, lack of supplies or clothes and other obstacles that keep the kids from attending school. McClellan oversees and coordinates a host of services, from a clothes closet that provides students with up to five free outfits a month to supplying backpacks, books and school supplies. The FIT program is funded through grants as well as private donations and most of the clothes, books and supplies come from the generous assistance of local churches, civic organizations and individuals
