The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed Amelia Island Book Festival board member Raffaela Marie Fenn. Fenn updated the club on this year’s festival, now in its 14th year, which will kickoff on Thursday February 19th with a performance by musician and author Zara Phillips. As in year’s past, highlights of the weekend-long event include the renowned Writers Workshop at Florida State College’s Betty P. Cook Center, the Authors in Schools Program featuring authors visiting all 15 Nassau County schools and the Reader’s Extravaganza with more than 100 bestselling authors sharing their books with the public. Fenn also spoke about the important role some Fernandina Beach Rotary Club members played in the creation of the festival. The brainchild of former Rotarians Don Parker, Don Shaw and Foy Maloy, as well as Joe Selement and others, Fenn said their goal was to make Amelia Island the “Book Island of America.” The success of the festival continues to grow with the support of current Rotarians like Shannon Brown of VyStar Credit Union, which sponsors the popular Readers Luncheon, and Rick Keffer, who along with his wife Hollie is sponsoring a special event this year -- “Up-close and Personal” with former Super Bowl champion and author Bill Curry. Fenn said the festival continues to spread the message that books are loyal friends that can open doors to the world for children and adults alike.
