The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed back Phyllis Rouse, head of the Amelia Island Montessori School (AIMS). The school, which opened locally 41 years ago, offers a unique educational opportunity based on the methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori more than 50 years ago. Students are encouraged to explore their world and discover what interests them most; then a curriculum is developed around that interest. AIMS offers its students choices and freedom within structure and guidelines, Rouse said. Through perseverance, collaboration, problem-solving and leadership, children learn 21st century skills for a successful future. AIMS, which is fully accredited by the state, added two grade levels this year and now serves students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade, which has increased enrollment from 73 to 113 students. Rouse added that children from as far away as Ponte Vedra and St. Simons attend the school to take advantage of the unique and fulfilling educational opportunities offered by AIMS.
