The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently enjoyed a presentation by club member Phil Belt, technical manager for Rayonier Advanced Materials Fernandina Beach mill. Belt, who transferred from Rayonier's Jesup facility, ensures that the products produced at the local mill meet customers' requirements. He explained that most pulp mills produce Kraft paper products. However, Rayonier's Fernandina mill is a sulfite mill, which processes wood to isolate and extract natural cellulose polymers. These polymers make up only 45 percent of wood. After being refined, the polymer components, or performance fibers, go into everything from food to fabric to pharmaceuticals. Belt, a chemist, closed by saying going to work in the pulp industry was never part of his plan, but he is glad to work for a successful company like Rayonier with an 88-year history of trust, innovation and integrity.
