Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed Nassau County Tax Collector John Drew as a guest speaker. Drew, who has served as tax collector since 2006, spoke of the offices many accomplishments, including having the highest organ donor registration on drivers licenses in the state. Drew said one of his primary goals is to partner with other agencies so the tax collector’s office becomes a one-stop shop where residents can receive as many services as possible such as getting birth certificates, making IRS payments and more. One new project Drew said he is particularly proud of is the Kids Tag Art program recently implemented in four Nassau County schools. The program, sponsored locally by Fernandina Beach Rotary Club Member Rick Keffer, encourages fifth grade students to create artwork to be featured on license plates, which the tax collector then offers for sale to the public for $15. Drew’s goal is to raise at least $1,000 for each of the four schools participating in the program.
