The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed back Nassau County Special Olympics Executive Director Tom Christenson and Olympian Emma Venerdi. Emma, who serves as a Global Messenger for the non-profit organization, said two new sports were added this year -- surfing and basketball skills. She added that she had won her level in surfing and that she and seven other local athletes would compete in the Area Games in Cocoa Beach in April. Christenson said three local Special Olympians, including an 85-year-old woman, had advanced to the State Games in basketball skills. Christenson noted that the local group, which serves more than 130 athletes throughout Nassau County, relies solely on the help of more than 325 volunteers from the community. Local financial support is key to the success of Nassau County Special Olympics with events such as the West Nassau High School Guns and Hoses basketball game on March 28 providing much-needed funding for a bus the organization hopes to purchase. Both he and Emma thanked the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club for the help club members have provided at the Track and Field Games in the past two years.
