Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed as a guest speaker Michelle Brazeau, managing director of Shen Yun Promotions in Jacksonville. Brazeau explained that in 2006, a group of leading Chinese artists from around the world came together in New York with a mission to revive authentic Chinese culture. The result was the Shen Yun Performing Arts Show. The performance showcases 5,000 years of Chinese culture through music, dance, art, legends and history. Brazeau said Shen Yun exemplifies the ancient Chinese ideals of morality, harmony and tolerance, which were subverted by the Chinese Cultural Revolution more than 60 years ago. In the past seven years, Shen Yun has been widely acclaimed by audiences in the more than 100 countries the show has toured. However, many of the performers have been banned by the Chinese government from returning to their homeland – even to visit their families – because of their participation in the show. Shen Yun Performing Arts will appear at the Times-Union Center in Jacksonville from May 9 through the 11th.
