Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club enjoyed a presentation by University of North Florida Athletic Director Lee Moon. Moon, who has led UNF's sports programs for seven years, said the school has worked hard to develop its basketball and baseball programs with a trip to the NCAA Basketball Championship tournament in March to show for its efforts. Moon added that UNF's baseball team's record of 45-17 gives it the highest winning average in Division 1. He said developing a winning sports program is no mean feat at UNF where academics come first and the average GPA of the college's athletes is 3.2. Asked by club members if UNF would ever have a football program, Moon said it was doubtful because it could be too expensive and diverting funds from other athletic programs would likely devalue them. Moon closed by saying he works each day with the belief that his athletes are students first and athletes second.
