The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed member and Fernandina Beach Main Street Project Director Jeff Kurtz, who updated the club on the Main Street program. Kurtz explained that Main Street is funded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. However, receiving that designation must come from the state of Florida. Kurtz added that there are 43 Main Street communities in Florida and more than 2,000 in the U.S. The purpose of the program is to assist communities in enhancing the health and vibrancy of their downtown while preserving the past. Kurtz said the partners in the program, including local businesses, the city, Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce and the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau have one goal in mind: Creating a downtown with greater economic stability.
