Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed Jennifer Cook, executive director of the Katie Caples Foundation. The foundation's mission is increasing the number of registered organ donors and eliminating the wait for adults and children in desperate need of lifesaving organ transplants. Cook said the need for organ donors is greater than ever with more than 125,000 people on waiting lists in the U.S.. Every 10 minutes, someone new is added to the list. More than 23 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant. Cook noted that advances in medical technology offer hope, particularly for kidney recipients who make up 90 percent of those needing organs. Someday soon, scientists will be able to grow a new kidney from our own cells. Until then, Cook said, educating potential donors, including the 115,000 high school students the foundation has spoken to this year alone, is the best hope for increasing organ donation.
