Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club received a legislative update from club member and State Senator Aaron Bean. Bean said the most recent session last spring as well as subsequent sessions attempted to tackle the health care crisis in Florida without success. The final legislative session in June did pass 231 of the 1,700 proposed bills, but the Health Care Act was not one of them. Bean highlighted some of the legislation that was signed into law, including bills protecting pregnant women from job discrimination, allowing citizens to carry guns during an evacuation, reducing the cost of cell phone and cable bills and approving the use of any medication for terminally ill patients, whether it has been approved by the FDA or not. Bean closed by saying the Legislature did pass a balanced budget, as mandated by the state's constitution.
