Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club celebrated the end of the club’s year with a cookout at the Chem Cell Club on the Amelia River.  Besides the great food and fellowship, the highlight of the evening was a presentation about the club’s many accomplishments throughout the year and the presentation of awards.  Outgoing President Shannon Brown talked about the club’s many outstanding projects, including the annual Dictionary Project through which the club has distributed 5,000 dictionaries in the past five years to third graders throughout Nassau County.  She also noted the ongoing success of fundraising efforts like the Harlem Ambassadors basketball tournament, which has allowed the club to award more than $300,000 in college scholarships since 1996.  Other projects she highlighted included the club’s 46 years of sponsorship of the Interact Club, raising funds to purchase 15 Shelter Boxes for distribution to disaster areas worldwide and sponsorship of both outbound and inbound students through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

The evening concluded with the presentation of two awards to club members.  Roger Ganzel received the Service Above Self Award for his many years of hard work writing and producing the club’s weekly newsletter.  The coveted Rotarian of the Year Award was presented to Past-President Sean McGill for his many contributions to nearly every club project from putting together the club’s team for the Amelia Challenge, to planning organizing and running the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball tournament, to selling tickets at the Omni-Amelia Island Futures Tennis Tournament to raise money for the club’s international projects.  President Brown closed by thanking the club’s directors for their service and for helping make the past year such a success.
