The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently celebrated the end of the club’s year with a barbecue and awards ceremony at Chem Cell.  In addition to the more than 70 club members, family and friends that attended, the club was honored to welcome Rotary District 6970 Governor Cynde Covington and her husband, Barry.  Outgoing President Trip Clark reviewed the many outstanding achievements and milestones of the club in the past year, including the club’s 85th anniversary, 75 years of support for Boy Scout Troop 89 and 45 years of sponsoring the Fernandina Beach High School Interact Club.  He also noted that the club had donated more than $27,000 to the Rotary Foundation to support a variety of Rotary projects around the world.

Clark also recognized members of the club’s Board of Directors for their support in the day-to-day operation of the club and gave special recognition to the work of the club’s Scholarship Committee in selecting the local high school graduates who received some $15,000 in scholarships.

Also announced were the recipients of two special awards.  Aaron Bean was awarded the Service Above Self Award for his many years of service to the club, most recently as the club’s Program Director.  Melanie Ferreira was honored as Rotarian of the Year for her strong support of the club and her work as Public Relations Director.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement by District Governor Cynde Covington that the club had reached a very special milestone:  recognition by the Rotary Foundation as a 100 percent Paul Harris Foundation Club.  Only five percent of all Rotary Clubs in the U.S. have achieved this designation.  To become a Paul Harris Fellow, a Rotarian must donate $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.  The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club raised more than $9,700 in just six weeks so that the new Paul Harris Fellows could be recognized before the club’s year-end.  Fernandina Beach Rotary Club members honored as new Paul Harris Fellows were:  Vince Cavallo, Trip Clark, Marlyne Clark, Clyde Davis, Phyllis Davis, Doug Geib, Kim Harding, Jim Hook, John Howard, Amy Kienle, Tom Kochhesier, Allison Lawrence, Wally Messer, Mike Mickler, Laureen Pagel, Shandra Riffey, Julian Sauer, Val Schwec, Renee Stoffel, Melvin Usery, Tim Wombles and Mike Clemens.
