The Club's own Val Schwec shares his personal history
Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club enjoyed learning more about one of its own members, Val Schwec, commercial director of Nassau Terminals. Schwec regaled the club with stories of the perilous journey his Ukrainian parents made to escape the Nazis during World War II. The couple finally settled in Brazil, where Schwec was born and raised, before the family moved to the U.S. As a result of his varied upbringing, Schwec speaks Ukrainian, Portuguese and English. Schwec began his career in finance with a New York City shipping company that purchased a share in Nassau Terminals in 1986. Schwec came to Fernandina in 1988 as Nassau Terminals operations manager and has continued to oversee port business since Kinder Morgan acquired Nassau Terminals in 2001.
At the conclusion of his talk, Schwec announced that Kinder Morgan -- a long-time supporter of educational opportunities for youth -- was donating $6,000 to the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club's college scholarship program.
