The Club Honors the 2013 Fernandina Beach Police Officer of the Year
Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club was honored to welcome 2013 Fernandina Beach Police Officer of the Year Christina Smith, shown receiving a plaque from Club President Shannon Brown expressing the club’s appreciation for her outstanding work. Chief Jim Hurley introduced Officer Smith to the club, saying that her high level of dedication and commitment to the police department and the community made her worthy of this prestigious honor. Chief Hurley also provided the club with his annual Fernandina Beach Police Department (FBPD) update. A highlight of the past year was the launch of the FBPD’s new Facebook page – another way of reaching out to the community, according to the Chief. He spoke about several issues of concern facing the community, including the increase in synthetic drugs available to teenagers, a rise in the number of homeless in the area and problems with illegal sales of prescription drugs. However, Chief Hurley also noted that in 2013 the city enjoyed the lowest crime rate ever recorded even though he continues his goal to reduce FBPD’s budget and rely on grants and other resources to fund the department.
