The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed Sarah Ena, an intern with Communities in Schools, as its guest speaker. Ena was a standout on the University of Montana Lady Grizzlies basketball team, which were Big Sky Conference champions for three straight years. During her presentation, she noted that University of Montana college sports drew a large fan base from throughout Montana and that athletes were treated like celebrities. While at first the recognition and adulation went to her head, Ena said she soon realized she needed to use her celebrity status to touch the lives of less fortunate people. She got involved in Athletes in Action, serving as president, and began working with Special Olympics, homeless shelters and other organizations that served those in need. After graduation, she considered continuing her basketball career at the professional level and was offered several opportunities to do so. However, she realized her true passion in life was to continue her work with non-profits, particularly those helping children. She recently moved to Nassau County to work as a marketing intern for Communities in Schools, a nationwide organization working in public schools to build a community of support for students, empowering them to stay in school and achieve a successful life.
