Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed NassauTRANSIT Transportation Director Mike Hays. Hays explained that NassauTRANSIT has been part of the state's coordinated transportation system since 1974 and provides service throughout all of Nassau County and into Jacksonville. He said the bus line serves qualified para-transit clients with door-to-door service, but also acts as a traditional public transit system available to all Nassau County residents. Hays added that anyone can hop a bus at one of eight stops and ride from Fernandina to Hilliard or to Jacksonville -- all for $1 each way. NassauTRANSIT's 25 buses provide more than 55,000 trips per year. In April, NassauTRANSIT will implement a new dispatch and scheduling program, roll out two new 14-passenger buses and add additional stops and times, including at Florida State College Jacksonville and in downtown Fernandina Beach.
