Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Wesley Poole who talked about the soon-to-be implemented Veterans Treatment Court. Poole spoke to the need for a special court for veterans of recent conflicts who often face mental health problems, suffer from substance abuse or homelessness. The Veterans Treatment Court, to be launched in July, will offer an alternative to conviction and jail time, Poole said. Instead, eligible veterans charged with nonviolent misdemeanor crimes will be enrolled in a 12 to 24 month-long program offering support, assistance and services. Poole said other such courts have had outstanding results in helping vets make positive life changes and get back on their feet.
