Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed Art Shuster of the Amelia Island Sunrise Rotary Club, who provided an update on the Canaan Orphanage in Haiti. In 2010, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club and the Amelia Island Sunrise Club joined together with the Rotary clubs of North Jacksonville, Arlington and East Arlington to secure a $15,000 grant from the Rotary Foundation to assist the Canaan Orphanage in providing clean drinking water for the children who live there. Each club contributed funds toward the grant and work has gone forward on providing a new well for the facility.
Founded in 2001 on 90 acres near Cap Haitien, the Canaan Orphanage not only provides a safe haven for the 70 to 100 orphans living there, but a school and medical facilities – all desperately needed since the earthquake devastated that area. The local coalition of Rotary Clubs is working closely with Cross International and other non-governmental organizations (NGO) to address the needs of the orphanage and plans to take on additional projects to improve the health and well-being of the children and families helped by the orphanage.
