Gary Abbey gives the Club a ShelterBox Update
The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club welcomed Gary Abbey, ShelterBox Ambassador for Rotary District 6970. Abbey, a member of the Jacksonville Oceanside Rotary Club, gave a brief history of the humanitarian organization, which was begun in England in 2000 to provide temporary housing to survivors of natural disasters throughout the world. In 2002, ShelterBox USA was founded with headquarters in Orlando. Abbey said the organization's goal is to have boots on the ground within 48 hours of any disaster. ShelterBox response teams triage the situation on arrival and immediately begin distributing the organization's big green survival boxes. The boxes contain durable tents designed to shelter a family of six as well as other essential supplies tailored to the location where the natural disaster has occurred. Abbey closed by saying he doubted he had shared any information the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club didn't already know since the group is more than half way to raising the $1,000 need for its 23rd ShelterBox.
