The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club recently welcomed Wills Shores, a volunteer with Cat Angels, Inc. SPCA., as the club’s guest speaker. Shores explained that Cat Angels was founded by Executive Director Beth Hackney 10 years ago to address the growing number of stray and feral cats on Amelia Island. Hackney, working with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) learned of programs used elsewhere to improve the health of feral cat populations while reducing their numbers. Since its beginning with only five volunteers, Cat Angels has implemented a successful Trap-Spay-and-Return program that has neutered more than 12,500 cats and a no-kill shelter that has found adoptive homes for some 5,000 cats. The organization funds much of its work from the proceeds of its thrift store on Eighth Street. Shores also noted that much of the excellent health care given to the cats is provided free by local veterinarians, including Fernandina Beach Rotary Club member Dr. Jennifer Towles.
