Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club was honored to welcome District 6970 Governor Percy Rosenbloom. Rosenbloom, who began his tenure as district governor July 1, is a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville – Florida’s first Rotary Club. He said he had visited nearly half of the 60 Rotary clubs in the district to share Rotary’s theme for the coming year – “Light Up Rotary.” Rosenbloom said that Rotary International President Gary C.K. Huang chose the phrase as this year’s inspiration from a saying by Confucius, “It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness” because it exemplifies Rotary’s ongoing goals to improve the quality of life for those in need around the world. He said each club could share in those goals whether it be through local endeavors, by sponsoring a Rotary Youth Exchange student or through such international efforts as Rotary’s polio immunization programs and potable water projects. Rosenbloom added that keeping Rotary relevant by offering online e-clubs and satellite clubs to keep membership strong is important; however, in the end, it’s not the number of members in Rotary; it’s the amount of Rotary in the members.
