Boy Scouts, Troop 89 stops by
Recently, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club enjoyed an update presentation by Fernandina Beach Scout Troop 89 Scoutmaster Dr. Daniel Matricia and scouts David Beale – soon to achieve Eagle Scout and Will Howington – Spirit Scout of the Year. The Club has sponsored the Troop for the past 77 years. The Scouts shared some of their adventures from the past year, including four two-day backpacking events they undertook to locations ranging from Cumberland Island to the Appalachian Trail. The Scouts take on these hikes to earn their Backpacking Merit Badges and carry everything they will need with them in their packs. Dr. Matricia pointed out that what they pack in, they also pack out so when they leave an area it’s as if they’ve never been there. Troop members also shared photos and anecdotes from their time at the annual week-long Scouting Summer Camp held in several locations throughout the U.S. The Troop raises money to support these excursions through their annual Christmas tree sale and with the help of the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club and other benefactors. The Club contributes “Happy Dollars” raised at each meeting to the Troop and recently allocated additional funds to replace the roof on the Troop’s meeting house. In closing, Scout David Beale noted that the Troop has grown significantly in the past three years and now has 30 members. He thanked the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club for its continued support.
