2014 Scholarship Recipients
In the past few weeks, the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club has been pleased to welcome all of the Nassau County high school graduates who were awarded college scholarships from the club. The visits began with Katy Lawson, who graduated from Fernandina Beach High School, was Interact Club President this past year and will be attending the University of Florida to study aerospace engineering; Katy Weaver from FBHS who plans to study business at Florida Atlantic University; and Bela Gonzalez from Yulee High, who was the drum major for the band and a member of the honor society and will also attend the University of Florida to study biology and, eventually, medicine.
The club then met Jordan Moyers, a graduate of West Nassau High School who played in the Warriors band and hopes to continue as a saxophonist in the University of Florida Jazz Band while studying chemical engineering; and Jennifer Portillo, who graduated from Yulee High and will go on to Florida State University to study international affairs.
The last of the scholarship recipients to visit the club included Kelsi Batrous of West Nassau High, who received the Dr. Jim Dawsey Memorial Scholarship to study nursing at Florida State College Jacksonville and hopes to eventually become a surgeon; Sydney Borland from Fernandina Beach High School who will pursue a nursing degree at the University of Florida; and Lee Southwick, also a graduate of FBHS who will study geography and math with the intentions of becoming a meteorologist and hurricane specialist.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Fernandina Beach Rotary Club’s scholarship program, which has awarded more than $300,000 to high school graduates of all four Nassau County high schools.
